Debating the fate of Tookie Williams

Re “Rapper Urges Clemency for Killer,” Nov. 20

It was the headline that first caught my attention. Then I read that Snoop Dogg, speaking at a prison rally, asked Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to spare Stanley “Tookie” Williams because he has turned his life around and is working from prison to urge youths to oppose gangs. No doubt he’s a wonderful fellow.

But Los Angeles County prosecutors, a statewide prosecutors group and some relatives of victims have adamantly opposed clemency. According to the article, some doubt exists about his conversion. I have difficulty understanding why reputable newspapers think everything from the mouth of a so-called Hollywood celebrity is news.

I give more weight to the concerns of prosecutors and victims’ relatives who adamantly oppose clemency. The scheduled execution should go forward.

Even though I agree with the moral arguments opposing Williams’ execution, I think the co-founder of the Crips is not the right poster boy for this cause. Maybe he has undergone a metamorphosis from the murderous thug he once was to a man of principle and character, but I would not hold my breath. How can a man who still refuses to admit his crimes have attained redemption?
