A Thanksgiving night brawl between family and friends in Costa Mesa left a 42-year-old man in critical condition with stab wounds to his chest, police said Friday.

A man and a 17-year-old boy were being held without bail on suspicion of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

Police were called to the fight in the 700 block of Joann Street about 11:15 p.m., Sgt. Marty Carver said. Most of those involved were related or knew each other, he said.

“There was a lot of alcohol involved,” Carver said.

Officers saw several men fighting with baseball bats, belts and knives in a grassy area in front of an apartment complex, Carver said, but they stopped when they saw police.

Several of the men ran into an apartment, where officers found the victim, a Costa Mesa man who had been stabbed several times in the chest. He was being treated at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana.

His name was not released pending notification of his wife, who was in Mexico visiting relatives, Carver said.

Humberto Vega, 20, of Costa Mesa was booked at the Costa Mesa Jail. The juvenile, whose name was not released, is being held at juvenile hall.
