WHEN UCLA HAS THE BALL

The Bruin offense has been steady under the direction of senior quarterback Drew Olson, who ranks sixth nationally in passing efficiency with a 179.24 rating. Running back Maurice Drew, who rushed for 322 yards and scored five touchdowns against Washington last season, will be the key to the running game. Wide receiver Junior Taylor, out for the season because of a knee injury, will be missed. But look for Brandon Breazell and Marcus Everett to step up.

WHEN WASHINGTON HAS THE BALL

The Huskies have the worst scoring offense in the Pacific 10 Conference, averaging less than 22 points a game. Louis Rankin leads the team in rushing, averaging 73 yards a game. The Huskies rely heavily on quarterback Isaiah Stanback, who can be dangerous if he can get the ball to Sonny Shackelford, the team leader in receiving with 16 catches for 249 yards.

KEYS TO A UCLA VICTORY

1. Stop Washington’s ground attack. The Huskies’ running game hurt UCLA last season by opening up play-action passes.

2. Give the ball to Maurice. A year ago, Drew rushed for 322 yards and five touchdowns. Need more?

3. Avoid punting game. UCLA punted only three times in its first two games but punted five times against Oklahoma. Not a good trend.
