Zac Taylor finished a record day with an eight-yard touchdown pass to Cory Ross in the second overtime to give Nebraska a 27-20 victory over No. 23 Iowa State on Saturday at Lincoln, Neb.

The Cornhuskers, 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the Big 12, avoided losing to Iowa State (3-1, 0-1) for the first time at home since 1977 and finally found some offensive spark after muddling to wins in their first three games.

Taylor completed 36 of 55 passes for 431 yards on a day the Cornhuskers all but abandoned their running game. He set school records for completions and yards.

“It’s the greatest feeling in the world coming off that field,” Taylor said. “Luckily we got the win, and we had to throw the ball to do it. I’m just glad Coach [Bill] Callahan had faith in our passing game.”

The Cornhuskers had come into the game 108th in the nation in passing and 107th in total offense. But with Iowa State using a lot of man-to-man coverage, Callahan called on Taylor to pick apart the Cyclones with short passes to 10 receivers.

“We decided we were going to continue to press on with the passing game,” Callahan said. “We saw some things we wanted to do in the passing game and we felt confident in our pass protection. The circumstances surrounding the game dictated that we throw a little bit more.”

No. 2 Texas 51, Missouri 20 -- Vince Young ran for 108 yards and a touchdown and threw for two other scores, and Texas converted three turnovers by Missouri quarterback Brad Smith into touchdowns at Columbia, Mo.

The Longhorns (4-0, 1-0) have won 11 straight games. Jamaal Charles had one rushing and one receiving touchdown for Texas, which is 4-0 for the fourth time in five seasons and beat Missouri (2-2, 0-1) for the 14th time in 15 games. Missouri, which began the game fifth in the nation in offense at 554 yards per game, was held to 330 yards.

No. 16 Texas Tech 30, Kansas 17 -- Cody Hodges threw for 333 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score at Lubbock, Texas.

In the Red Raiders’ first game against decent competition, Hodges had a few rough spots. He fumbled four times, losing two that the Jayhawks (3-1, 0-1) converted into points, and one of his passes was intercepted.

Texas Tech is 4-0, 1-0.

Kansas defenders put pressure on Hodges throughout, sacking him four times. Texas Tech is 4-0, 1-0.

He completed 34 of 52 passes and his yardage was a season low for when he has played in all four quarters.

Oklahoma 43, Kansas State 21 -- Adrian Peterson rushed for 51 yards and a touchdown before leaving with an injury to his right foot in the second quarter at Norman, Okla., putting a damper on the Sooners’ best performance of the season.

Kejuan Jones had two touchdown runs in relief of Peterson, and Rhett Bomar ran for one score and passed for another as Oklahoma (2-2, 1-0) won its Big 12 opener for the sixth straight year.

Peterson returned to the sidelines in the second half but did not play.

Jones scored on a three-yard run to give Oklahoma a 19-0 halftime lead, and the Sooners built on it with help from numerous mistakes by Kansas State (3-1, 0-1).
