The Diversity of the Rings

Share

I was extremely disappointed with the article “Hang Time” (by Nicole LaPorte, Aug. 28). This was an opportunity to show the diversity and camaraderie of the Los Angeles community. You do not get that feeling from the piece or the accompanying photos.

There’s another set of rings (referred to as “kids”) at Santa Monica beach that is far more interesting. Here you will hear a cacophony of languages being spoken. “Action,” an African American, is the true godfather of the rings. And this is where the women and girls participate. One Sunday this summer, an Arab girl in traditional attire was swinging. No one spoke of her clothes, but applauded her efforts.

The article missed the genuine friendliness of the regulars at these rings--a reflection of the good hearts of Southern Californians.
