The Tower Bar

Located in one of L.A.’s most celebrated architectural gems, the Argyle Hotel, this newcomer has a lot going for it: walnut-paneled walls, a city view, a talented pianist and a menu from Ammo veteran Piero Morovich. Not to be missed are his grilled pizzas, such as the one with mozzarella, fontina and baby artichokes. Desserts hit the spot too, especially the fun do-it-yourself sundae.

* Pizza, $15; sundae, $8. 8358 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood; (323) 848-6677.

Il Sole

This pretty little trattoria, on the westernmost end of Sunset Plaza, has a small, shaded patio and a menu of Italian classics such as pappa al pomodoro (a hearty tomato-bread soup) and spaghetti with olive oil, garlic and crushed red pepper. At night, flickering candles add romance. But the restaurant is famously popular with Hollywood dealmakers too.

* Pappa al pomodoro, $9; spaghetti, $19. 8741 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood; (310) 657-1182.

Restaurant at the Standard Hollywood

This ultra-groovy coffee shop, off the hotel lobby, is open 24/7. (So there is an alternative to Jerry’s and Mel’s.) The menu is eclectic, to say the least. Even the overnight menu, offered between midnight and 6 a.m., spans the globe. There’s miso soup, a Cuban sandwich, pepperoni pizza and chocolate fondue.

* Soup, $8; sandwich, $9; pizza, $12; fondue, $10. 8300 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood; (323) 650-9090.

Talesai

Considered by some to be L.A.’s most upscale Thai, Talesai features an art-filled black-and-white dining room and tables topped with white linens and fresh flowers. But it’s still easy enough for a family get-together or casual date. You’ll find all your Thai standards (beef satay, thom yum soup) as well as an extensive selection of vegetarian offerings.

* Satay, $9.95; thom yum, $4.50. 9043 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood; (310) 275-9724.

Cafe Med

The patio is coveted at this bustling trattoria. It enjoys a choice view of the designer-clad style mongers who promenade the Strip, as well as the inevitable traffic jam. Add a glass of Chianti, a margherita pizza, and you’ll know why this spot is so popular.

* Pizza, $10.75. 8615 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood; (310) 652-0445.
