Man Hit, Killed by L.A.-Bound Amtrak Train in Fullerton

A man died in an apparent suicide Friday when he threw himself in front of an oncoming Amtrak train, Fullerton police said.

Commuters were delayed more than two hours, officials said.

Six people witnessed the man jump onto the tracks and lie down as the train approached the station between Harbor Boulevard and Lemon Street at 2:06 p.m., Lt. Steve Matson said. The man, 47, was not identified pending notification of family.

The Pacific Surfliner, carrying 112 passengers to Union Station, was traveling at 50 mph and unable to stop. It was delayed two hours and four minutes, said Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham.

“The people who chose to stay stayed,” Graham said. Other passengers found alternative transportation.

The incident delayed another Amtrak train for 34 minutes and Metrolink’s Orange County and 91 lines up to 15 minutes, said Denise Tyrell, a spokeswoman for Metrolink.

Officials opened a second track to shorten the delay, she said.
