Dodger Fans Parting Ways With the Team

Share

As a token of appreciation for the thousands of redundant, boring, bland, postgame cliches Jim Tracy has given us over the last five seasons of mediocre Dodger baseball, I offer him the following advice:

Hold your head up high Jim Tracy, you’re as good as they come. You managed your heart out and gave 110%. Sometimes the ball doesn’t bounce your way. You win some and you lose some. Tomorrow is another day, but stick a fork in your career as Dodger skipper because it’s done.

It’s obvious the storybook history of the Dodgers is now written in a rag tabloid. “The Boys of Summer” have become “The Toys of Slummer.”

If there are any managerial candidates for the Dodgers who seriously think they have a shot at success as the new manager, I have some property in the Mojave I’d like them to see.

Frank McCourt is “disappointed one of his players chose to go to the media rather than to him with concerns.”

The Times has been touting these same concerns since Day 1 of the season. Where has McCourt been all season? Out in space?

I am certain Jim Tracy is pleased to be paid $700,000 to leave the Dodger organization, because current ownership will never commit to competing for free-agent talent. The Dodgers should bring in a top high school or college coach, save lots of money on salary, then blame the new guy when he cannot field a winner with the tools he is given.

Jamie McCourt really made a lot of sense in her recent lunch with T.J. Simers. I feel much better about the organization’s progress now. On the hillside at Dodger Stadium, let’s replace “Think Blue” with “We Made Money!”

Dodger fans have good reason to be perplexed by Jim Tracy’s exit. Local sportswriters rarely called attention to Tracy’s questionable lineups and botched game strategy.

Consider that Tracy often started Jason Phillips, a light-hitting backup catcher, at first base over .450-slugging Hee-Seop Choi. In several close losses, Tracy called for Choi, J.D. Drew and Milton Bradley to bunt, knowing full well his GM advocates letting big bats swing away. And how many times did Tracy leave poor Jeff Weaver on the mound to squeeze out one more inning, only to pull him after the death blow was delivered?

Clearly, the manager was not the reason the Dodgers missed the playoffs this year. But had Tracy returned with a healthy 2006 team, his blunders might have cost the team dearly.

Now that the Dodgers sent Jim Tracy packing, will Jeff Kent be far behind? If you were Kent, would you still want to play for this unpromising team at 38?

Who will want to play for this team or manage it? Better yet, who wants to buy tickets, attend games or root for a team going nowhere? Not me and I have watched, listened or attended virtually every game since 1958. No more. There is only one Dodger aspect I will miss: Vin Scully. Bye, Vin.

Mr. McCourt, those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. There is no longer a pro football team in Los Angeles, in part because the fans refused to support an inferior product. Only you know how many no-show tickets were sold this year. I know where 10 of them are. In my desk drawer. I couldn’t even give them away.

Now, thanks to you, there is no longer a professional baseball team in Los Angeles. Next time don’t hire a boy to do a man’s job.

I was a Dodger fan back when Willie Davis patrolled the outfield. I grew up with Garvey, Lopes, Russell and Cey. I remember 1981 and 1988.

Now the Dodgers I knew wear red and play in Orange County. Arte Moreno correctly gave the name Los Angeles to his Angels because that team represents what I remember about major league baseball in Southern California.

I am putting away my Dodger cap until Frank McCourt goes bankrupt and has to sell the team. I cannot support a team that is run like a PS2 game.

Millions of dedicated baseball fans disagree with Bill Plaschke’s indictment of DePodesta and the McCourts and look forward to seeing the Three Stooges at the helm of the Dodgers for years to come. For starters, there are all the fans in San Diego, San Francisco, Arizona, Colorado ...

T.J. Simers spends five years bagging on Jim Tracy, criticizes his managerial moves and even going to the extreme of resorting to childish name calling. Now that the Dodgers have fired Tracy -- I mean, had a mutual parting of ways -- Simers is on his side. He makes it sound as if all his cuts and criticism over the years were just good old fun.

Well, isn’t that a hoot. I am sure Tracy is laughing right now. Tell you what, T.J., I promise I will write something nice too, when the L.A. Times finally comes to its senses and has a mutual parting of the ways with you.

All the flak from Page 2, Plaschke, and me won’t change the facts: DePodesta is safe at home, and we Dodger fans are out.
