Ladies’ Day at Keeneland

Fillies and mares will be in the spotlight in a pair of graded stakes at Keeneland today.

Nine turf specialists will get together in the $400,000 Grade II WinStar Galaxy at one mile before 11 will go 1 1/8 miles on the main track in the $500,000 Grade I Spinster.

In the Galaxy, Intercontinental will try for her third win in as many starts over the Keeneland grass. Trained by Bobby Frankel, the 5-year-old Danehill mare has won 11 of 20 in her career. Her most recent victory was in the Palomar Handicap on Sept. 2 at Del Mar.

The Spinster, which was won a year ago by Azeri, includes only one filly or mare that has a win over the Keeneland main track. Halory Leigh, who will break from the outside, won a $59,000 allowance there on Oct. 10, 2004.

Tamwheel, Isola Piu Bella, Pampered Princess, Bending Strings and Pleasant Home are other contenders.

Race of the day: Moonlite Romance, second to unbeaten Bro Lo in the I’m Smokin on Sept. 5 at Del Mar, won’t find any opposition of that quality when he starts in the $75,000 Cavonnier Stakes at Santa Anita. Alex Solis will ride the 2-year-old Game Plan colt for the first time for owners Curt and Lila Lanning and trainer Ed Moger Jr. in the seven-furlong contest restricted to California-breds. Her Red, Seven Nation Army, Direct Connect, At A Boy Russ and Topper Country complete the field.

One for the road: Second In Command is much improved of late for trainer Linda Rice and can win for the third consecutive time as he steps into stakes company in the $100,000 Woodford at Keeneland. Cornelio Velasquez will ride the 5-year-old Silver Deputy horse in the 5 1/2 -furlong turf race.

Exotically speaking: A pick four using Delivering Speed, Smile N Wildcat and Draw Off in the sixth, More Dust, Mr. Splash and Like A Tiger in the seventh, Moonlite Romance in the eighth and American Prophecy, Ambitious One and Sentimental Daze in the ninth.
