Louisiana State Holds on, 21-17

Louisiana State refused to let this one slip away.

Joseph Addai ran for a career-high 156 yards and a touchdown, JaMarcus Russell had two touchdown passes and 10th-ranked LSU ended a three-game home losing streak to No. 11 Florida with a 21-17 victory Saturday in a Southeastern Conference game at Baton Rouge, Fla.

LSU led, 14-0, in the first quarter, but Florida scored 17 straight points to move ahead in the third. The momentum swing was reminiscent of LSU’s last home game, when it squandered a 21-point lead against Tennessee and lost, 30-27, in overtime.

The Tigers (4-1, 3-1) didn’t let it happen again.

They put together a 12-play, 75-yard drive -- converting on fourth down and getting a big play on third and nine -- to move back in front for good with 12:35 to play. Addai ran seven times on the drive, including a three-yarder for the go-ahead score.

But Russell had the key plays. He gained four yards on fourth and one, then floated a 21-yard pass to Dwayne Bowe on third down to keep the drive alive. Russell completed 14 of 22 passes for 236 yards.

The Tigers overcame five turnovers, 11 penalties and five sacks to win their third straight.

The offense has remained a huge question under Urban Meyer, and the Gators (5-2, 3-2)blew several chances to open up a big lead in front of a record crowd of 92,402 at Tiger Stadium.

No. 2 Texas 42, No. 24 Colorado 17 -- Vince Young ran for three touchdowns, passed for two more and the Longhorns (6-0, 3-0) avoided any post-Oklahoma letdown with a convincing win over the Buffaloes (4-2, 2-1) in a Big 12 Conference game at Austin, Texas.

Young was flawless running and passing in the first two quarters, scoring on runs of one, 16 and nine yards. He also threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Limas Sweed that made it 35-3. Sweed and Young hooked up for another touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Young finished with 394 total yards with a career-high 336 passing. His 86.2% completion rate (25 of 29) set a Texas record. He was 16 of 18 in the first half for 258 yards.

No. 5 Georgia 34, Vanderbilt 17 -- D.J. Shockley threw three touchdown passes, Thomas Brown rushed for 91 yards and the Bulldogs (6-0, 4-0) defeated the Commodores (4-3, 2-2) in an SEC game at Nashville.

Georgia improved to 18-2 on the road under Coach Mark Richt. The SEC’s top offense rolled up 446 yards. Shockley was 15 of 30 for 298 yards, and Brandon Coutu also kicked field goals of 40 and 28 yards.

No. 6 Alabama 13, Mississippi 10 -- Jamie Christensen’s 31-yard field goal as time expired lifted the Crimson Tide (6-0, 4-0) over the Rebels (2-4, 0-3) in an SEC game at Oxford, Miss.

Quarterback Brodie Croyle finished with 234 yards passing and converted three third downs on the game-winning drive, which started at the Alabama 24-yard line with 2:39 to play.

Alabama’s Kenneth Darby, the SEC’s leading rusher, had 70 of his 100 yards in the second half.

No. 7 Miami 34, Temple 3 -- Kyle Wright threw four touchdown passes in the first 19 minutes to lead the Hurricanes (5-1) over the Owls (0-7) in a nonconference game at Philadelphia.

Sinorice Moss had three catches for 122 yards, including a 92-yard touchdown pass play on Miami’s second offensive play. Devin Hester returned a punt 48 yards for a touchdown.

No. 13 Texas Tech 59, Kansas State 20 -- Cody Hodges threw for 643 yards and five touchdowns to help the Red Raiders (6-0, 3-0) defeat the Wildcats (4-2, 1-2) in a Big 12 game at Lubbock, Texas.

Hodges, who left the game with 4:48 remaining, completed 44 of 65 passes with two interceptions. He threw touchdown passes of 34, 20, 21, three and 39 yards. The major college record for yards passing in a game is 716 by Houston’s David Klingler in 1990.

No. 14 Boston College 35, Wake Forest 30 -- Kevin Challenger made a foot-dragging catch for a 26-yard touchdown at the end zone sideline with 1:18 left as the Eagles (6-1, 3-1) rallied to beat the Demon Deacons (2-5, 1-3) in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Boston.

Boston College fell behind, 17-0, on a wet and windy day when it had five turnovers, a blocked punt and no fewer than 10 dropped passes. The Eagles trailed, 30-21, with 3:24 left when Matt Ryan replaced Quinton Porter for the final two drives and led the team to touchdowns.

West Virginia 46, No. 19 Louisville 44 -- Freshman running back Steve Slaton scored six touchdowns after halftime, including all three of his team’s scores after regulation, to lead the Mountaineers (6-1, 3-0) to a triple-overtime win over the Cardinals (4-2, 0-2) in a Big East game at Morgantown, W.Va.

In the third overtime, Eric Wicks tackled Brian Brohm short of the goal line on a two-point conversiontry.

No. 21 Auburn 34, Arkansas 17 -- Kenny Irons rushed for a career-high 182 yards, and Brandon Cox threw three second-half touchdown passes to lead the Tigers (5-1, 3-0) over the Razorbacks (2-4, 0-3) in an SEC game at Fayetteville, Ark.

No. 25 Texas Christian 38, Army 17 -- Jeff Ballard passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more to lead the Horned Frogs (6-1) over the Black Knights (0-6) in a nonconference game at Fort Worth.
