Getzlaf Is Out With Left Shoulder Injury

Rookie forward Ryan Getzlaf was put on injured reserve Monday because of a strained left shoulder suffered in the Mighty Ducks’ 5-3 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Sunday.

Getzlaf will be sidelined for a minimum of seven days retroactive to Sunday. To fill the spot on the roster, the Ducks recalled veteran center Aaron Gavey from their minor league affiliate in Portland, Maine.

Getzlaf, the highly touted former first-round pick, had made an impact in his last two games. After a brief demotion to the fourth line, he scored his first NHL goal Friday against Detroit and then assisted on the first two goals against the Coyotes.

“It’s frustrating anytime you get injured, especially when you’re starting to come together,” Getzlaf said. “I was feeing a little more comfortable on the ice and things were going pretty well.”

King forward Jeremy Roenick sat out practice because of a sore groin and sore hamstring. Though he said he would play tonight against the Ducks, Roenick admitted those problems are part of his frustration with his performance to date.

“I just needed a break today,” Roenick said. “I’m battling a lot right now. The groin, the hamstring, equipment, the ice. I don’t want to make excuses, there’s just a lot of stuff.”

Roenick has three goals, two in the season opener, and no assists. He didn’t have a shot on goal in the Kings’ 3-2 loss to Calgary on Sunday. He also sat out a few minutes of the first period because of skate trouble. But beyond the equipment and skates, Roenick is frustrated with his play.

“I go one way and the puck goes the other,” Roenick said. “I have had shots, but I don’t think I have had a lot of quality chances. It’s only nine games, but it hasn’t been happening for me up to now.”

Duck goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere will sit out the first matchup with the Kings as he recovers from a groin injury, but he said he felt much better after a full practice and could be ready for Friday’s game with St. Louis.

“I felt a little stiff but no sharp pain, which is what we’re looking for,” said Giguere, who injured the groin last week in St. Louis.

King forward Valeri Bure had the second of three epidural shots for what the team says is a protruding disk. Bure hasn’t played since Sept. 29.
