Jenkins Slams the Door on Padres

Geoff Jenkins hit a grand slam to cap a seven-run second inning to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 12-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on Friday night at Milwaukee.

Chris Capuano (15-9) became Milwaukee’s first 15-game winner since Cal Eldred went 16-16 in 1993. This is Capuano’s first full big league season -- he was injured for part of 2004 and made only 17 starts.

Padre starter Brian Lawrence (7-14) got only five outs in the shortest start of his career. Lawrence, who fell to 2-8 in his last 10 decisions, gave up five runs and four hits.

Carlos Lee made it 9-0 in the fourth when he hit a two-run shot to reach 30 homers for the third straight season He also got his club-leading 100th RBI.

Florida 4, New York 2 -- Helping himself with his baserunning and his bat, Dontrelle Willis earned his 19th victory, pitching into the ninth inning at Miami.

He went two for four, including a double during the Marlins’ two-run sixth. He scored their last run, racing home from third on a grounder and beating the throw with a headfirst slide.

Willis (19-8) broke the club mark for victories that he shared with Carl Pavano, who went 18-8 last year. The left-hander tied St. Louis’ Chris Carpenter for the major league lead in wins.

Atlanta 7, Cincinnati 4 -- Tim Hudson (12-7) won his fourth consecutive start and helped himself with a two-run triple -- the first of his career -- to highlight a six-run fourth inning at Atlanta.

The Reds’ Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 34th home run of the season. It was the 535th of his career, moving him past Jimmie Foxx for sole possession of 13th place on the all-time list.

Houston 6, St. Louis 5 -- Eric Bruntlett singled home Jose Vizcaino with two out in the bottom of the 13th inning. The Astros had already extended the game with homers in the ninth and 10th innings against Cardinal closer Jason Isringhausen.

Philadelphia 7, Washington 1 -- The Phillies sent 10 batters to the plate in the third inning at Washington and scored five runs, highlighted by a grand slam by David Bell, who had not homered in 126 previous at-bats with the bases loaded -- the longest such drought among current players.

San Francisco 6, Arizona 3 -- Ray Durham homered and drove in four runs to back a solid outing by Jason Schmidt at Phoenix. Schmidt (12-6) yielded three runs, four hits in 6 2/3 innings to improve to 5-0 in his last six starts.

Chicago 7, Pittsburgh 3 -- Nomar Garciaparra and Michael Barrett homered during a three-run sixth inning at Pittsburgh, and Greg Maddux (11-11), who dominated for five innings, got his 316th career victory.
