Festival shows Wise films
“Tideland,” directed by Terry Gilliam and starring Jennifer Tilly and Jeff Bridges, is among the movies being shown at the San Sebastian Film Festival, the oldest and most prestigious in the Spanish-speaking world.
The 53rd edition of the festival, which opened Thursday and runs through Sept. 24, also includes Michael Winterbottom’s “A Cock and Bull Story,” starring Kelly Macdonald and Jeremy Northam; Andreas Dresen’s “Summer in Berlin”; and Anne Fontaine’s “Entre ses mains.”
A retrospective of the work of Robert Wise, which had been scheduled, will run throughout the 10-day festival. Wise, who directed the classic 1960s musicals “West Side Story” and “The Sound of Music,” died Wednesday of heart failure. He was 91.
During the festival, Ben Gazzara and Willem Dafoe will be honored with lifetime achievement awards. Anjelica Huston heads this year’s jury.
“We’ve tried to do a balanced selection of interesting films responding to a great variety of tastes,” said festival director Mikel Olaciregui.
