April 4, 1950: The Los Angeles City Council marked the city’s 100th year of incorporation by passing a resolution introduced by Councilman George Moore. It spoke of the city’s rapid growth and of the “intelligent planning and thoughtful provision of some of the city’s first citizens in laying the foundations on which such a great metropolis could be built.”

It also hinted at future challenges, saying that Los Angeles, “having reached a status of the third-largest city in the nation and still recognizing the need for additional facilities to care for our future citizens, is planning construction of a large auditorium and music center, additional freeways and additional sources of water and electrical energy, which can only be accomplished by united efforts of our citizens and the governing body of our city.”

A brief story about the council’s resolution ran in The Times under the headline, “NO BABY NOW: Los Angeles Observes 100 Years as City.”
