A Long Beach police officer and mayoral candidate has been arrested in Los Angeles on suspicion of exposing himself and resisting arrest, authorities said.

John Stolpe, 49, was apprehended by a Griffith Park ranger Thursday. He was released from custody early Friday on $10,000 bail. Although not formally charged with the misdemeanor, he faces an April 27 court hearing, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Stolpe, one of five candidates seeking the mayor’s post in Tuesday’s city election, has been suspended pending an investigation into the incident, a Long Beach police spokesman said. Stolpe could not be reached for comment Saturday.

Jane Kolb, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Parks and Recreation Department, said Stolpe was apprehended near the Los Angeles Zoo. She said reports indicated he suffered cuts and scrapes while attempting to run away from a ranger.
