Claudio Vargas made sure the Milwaukee Brewers didn’t rally again.

Vargas and three relievers combined on a four-hitter as the Arizona Diamondbacks sent the Brewers to their first loss of the season, 7-0, Sunday at Milwaukee.

“To take one here and whack them around a little bit feels pretty good,” Arizona Manager Bob Melvin said.

Milwaukee and Detroit, the last unbeaten teams in the major leagues, both were 5-0 before losing Sunday.

“You know you’re not going to win 162 games, but it still hurts to lose this one because we wanted to be 6-0 going on the road,” Milwaukee Manager Ned Yost said.

Damion Easley and Tony Clark homered for the Diamondbacks, who had six hits. Corey Koskie was three for four for Milwaukee.

Vargas (1-0) pitched six innings, giving up only two singles and a walk while striking out six. He did not allow a runner past second base.

San Francisco 6, Atlanta 5 -- Randy Winn blooped a single to shallow right field to score the winning run after Lance Niekro led off the ninth with a homer to left at San Francisco.

Chipper Jones sprained his right ankle in the eighth inning. The Braves’ third baseman charged in on Mike Matheny’s slow roller with two out, appearing to get his spikes caught in the soggy field. He grabbed his knee as soon as he went to the ground and rolled around in pain, staying down for several minutes before being helped off.

Colorado 10, San Diego 4 -- Not even Padre ace Jake Peavy could slow down the Rockies, who tore apart Petco Park as if it were Coors Field.

The Rockies embarrassed the defending NL West champion Padres for the third straight game, chasing Peavy during a seven-run fifth inning. Jason Smith homered twice, and Cory Sullivan tied a big-league record by hitting two triples during the fifth inning.

The Rockies became the first team to score at least 10 runs in three straight games at the downtown ballpark.

Chicago 8, St. Louis 4 -- Michael Barrett hit a grand slam against Jason Isringhausen in the eighth inning as the Cubs completed a three-game sweep at Chicago.

Houston 7, Washington 3 -- Andy Pettitte gave up three runs in 6 1/3 innings, and Adam Everett had three runs batted in to lead the Astros at Houston.

Pittsburgh 5, Cincinnati 3 -- Jack Wilson hit a two-run homer at Cincinnati, and the Pirates ended their season-opening six-game losing streak.

New York 3, Florida 2 -- David Wright hit a tying two-run triple in the seventh inning and a sacrifice fly in the ninth, driving in all of the Met runs at New York.
