Mets Keep Their Fast Start Going

The New York Mets are already looking ahead after beating the Milwaukee Brewers, 9-3, Sunday at New York to set two franchise records for best starts to a season.

Atlanta is coming to town, and the Mets are looking for a fast start against their NL East rivals.

“They’re the division champions,” said Manager Willie Randolph, whose team opens a three-game set against the Braves today. “Those are the guys we’ve got to go through to be where we want to be.”

New York is feeling good after taking two of three from the Brewers to improve to 9-2, its fastest start ever. The Mets also set a franchise mark by winning their first four series of the season.

David Wright, leading the National League in hitting with a .421 average coming into the game, had a single and double and scored twice for New York.

Philadelphia 1, Colorado 0 -- Brett Myers combined with two relievers on a seven-hit shutout and Ryan Howard homered at Denver, leading the Phillies to the first 1-0 win by a visiting team at Coors Field. In 888 regular-season games at Coors Field, the only other 1-0 game was July 9, 2005, when the Rockies beat San Diego.

San Diego 4, Atlanta 3 -- Brian Giles sparked a comeback from a three-run deficit at Atlanta with his first homer of the year.

Trevor Hoffman gave up two-out singles to Andruw Jones and Brian Jordan in the ninth, then struck out Jeff Francouer for his first save.

Chicago 7, Pittsburgh 3 -- Todd Walker hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Aramis Ramirez had a two-run shot for the Cubs at Pittsburgh. Derrek Lee hit a two-run double that chased starter Ian Snell (0-1) in a four-run sixth -- his 43rd hit against the Pirates since 2004, the most by any major league player against another club in that span.

Houston 8, Arizona 5 -- Lance Berkman had three hits and three RBIs and Morgan Ensberg hit a three-run homer for the Astros at Phoenix.

Luis Gonzalez was one for 20 on the homestand before hitting a home run just over the right-field fence leading off the fourth to put Arizona up, 2-1.

Washington 7, Florida 5 -- Ryan Church hit a pair of two-run homers, including a tiebreaking drive in a three-run ninth at Miami.
