Part 2: Parcels northwest of Lake Tahoe

In Lassen, Plumas and Tahoe national forests, many of the U.S. Forest Service parcels proposed for sale form checkerboard patterns of homesteads and parkland. Other parcels preserve open space and archeological sites. This second of a three-part series of graphics reviews a sampling of parcels in California that could be up for sale. The largest city in this area is Chico, pop. 40,079.

In eastern Lassen National Forest

* Sierra Pacific Industries owns most of the land around these parcels near Chico and is actively logging. Crisscrossed by creeks and dirt roads, these low mountains offer hiking and winter recreation.

Near Concow

* Banks of Lake Oroville’s Big Bend are too steep for boaters to camp or picnic; parcels could be used to expand nearby housing developments.

Near Greenville

* Parcels to the northwest of town lead to Lake Almanor-area recreational activities; they are level, wooded with young-growth conifers.

Near Portola

* This valley of wetlands and open range forming the Feather RiverOs headwaters is mostly owned by Bureau of Land Management; Spring Valley Ranch surrounds square parcel.
