Who Really Owns ‘American’ Business?

Regarding “PepsiCo Names Successor to CEO,” Aug. 15, about the appointment of a foreign-born chief executive and the role of international markets:

The article raises an interesting question: Who really owns American corporations?

Do you know who owns Pepsi? Any of the three distinct corporations that have been spawned by that original product?

According to Standard & Poor’s, 68% of PepsiCo Inc. stock is owned by institutions. But institutions act for individuals and other entities. Who are they? Where do they reside?

The idea of an “American” corporation has become outdated, at least when discussing events related to huge international companies such as Pepsi, which operates around the world.

Only about a third of Pepsi’s employees are in the U.S. these days. This is probably true of many Fortune 500 companies.

But back to the initial question: Who owns Pepsi?
