The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan, Iraq or the United Arab Emirates:

James J. Arellano, 19, of Cheyenne, Wyo.; private first class, Army. Arellano was killed Aug. 17 when his patrol unit was attacked with improvised bombs and small-arms fire in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 67th Armored Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Thomas J. Barbieri, 24, of Gaithersburg, Md.; specialist, Army. Barbieri was killed Wednesday when his patrol unit was attacked with small-arms fire south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Joseph R. Blake, 34, of Portland, Ore.; private, Army. Blake was killed Aug 17 when his platoon was attacked with small-arms fire near Tor Kalay in eastern Afghanistan’s Kunar province. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division at Ft. Drum, N.Y.

Brad A. Clemmons, 37, of Chillicothe, Ohio; master sergeant, Air Force. Clemmons was killed Monday when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle as it was traveling in a transportation convoy en route to Taji, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 354th Civil Engineer Squadron at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska.

Jeremiah S. Cole, 26, of Hiawatha, Kan.; corporal, Army. Cole was killed Aug. 16 when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in the Bermel district of southeast Afghanistan’s Paktika province. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division at Ft. Drum, N.Y.

Paul J. Darga, 34, of Lansing, Mich.; chief petty officer, Navy. Darga was killed Tuesday when a homemade bomb exploded as he and his team tried to defuse it in Iraq’s Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 2 at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base in Norfolk, Va., and was serving with the 1st Marine Logistics Group headquartered at Camp Pendleton.

Gabriel G. DeRoo, 25, of Paw Paw, Mich.; sergeant, Army. DeRoo was killed Aug. 20 when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Mosul, Iraq, northwest of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Robert E. Drawl Jr., 21, of Alexandria, Va.; specialist, Army. Drawl was among three soldiers killed Aug. 19 when a roadside bomb exploded near their convoy vehicle in eastern Afghanistan’s Kunar province. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division at Ft. Drum, N.Y.

Adam A. Galvez, 21, of Salt Lake City; corporal, Marine Corps. Galvez was one of two Marines killed Aug. 20 when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Iraq’s Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force in Twentynine Palms, Calif.

James D. Hirlston, 21, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Hirlston was killed in combat Wednesday in Iraq’s Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Wakkuna A. Jackson, 21, of Jacksonville, Fla.; sergeant, Army. Jackson was among three soldiers killed Aug. 19 when a roadside bomb exploded near their convoy vehicle in eastern Afghanistan’s Kunar province. She was assigned to the 710th Combat Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division at Ft. Drum, N.Y.

Chadwick T. Kenyon, 20, of Tucson; hospitalman, Navy. Kenyon was killed Aug. 20 when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Iraq’s Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force in Twentynine Palms, Calif.

Jeremy E. King, 23, of Meridian, Idaho; sergeant, Army. King was killed Thursday when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 8th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Jeffrey S. Loa, 32, of Waianae, Hawaii; staff sergeant, Army. Loa was killed Aug. 16 while on foot patrol when a roadside bomb exploded near him in Ramadi, Iraq, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 35th Armored Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division in Baumholder, Germany.

Randy L. Newman, 21, of Bend, Ore.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Newman was one of two Marines killed Aug. 20 when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Iraq’s Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force in Twentynine Palms, Calif.

Jordan C. Pierson, 21, of Milford, Conn.; corporal, Marine Corps Reserve. Pierson was killed in combat Friday in Iraq’s Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Corps Reserve in Plainville, Conn.

Marquees A. Quick, 28, of Hoover Ala.; sergeant, Army. Quick was killed Aug. 19 when his unit was attacked with grenades while on a security mission in Ramadi, Iraq, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division in Friedberg, Germany.

Adam P. Servais, 23, of Onalaska, Wis.; senior airman, Air Force. Servais was killed Aug. 19 when his vehicle was attacked with small-arms fire in southern Afghanistan’s Uruzgan province. He was assigned to the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron at Hurlburt Field, Fla.

Christopher F. Sitton, 21, of Montrose, Colo.; specialist, Army. Sitton was among three soldiers killed Aug. 19 when a roadside bomb exploded near their convoy vehicle in eastern Afghanistan’s Kunar province. He was assigned to the 710th Combat Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division at Ft. Drum, N.Y.

Gordon G. Solomon, 35, of Fairborn, Ohio; staff sergeant, Marine Corps. Solomon was killed in combat Thursday in Iraq’s Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

William E. Thorne, 26, of Hospers, Iowa; private first class, Army. Thorne was killed Thursday when a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Ruben J. Villa Jr., 36, of El Paso; sergeant first class, Army. Villa died of a noncombat-related cause Aug. 18 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. His death is under investigation, but no details were released. He was assigned to the Area Support Group at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Dwayne E. Williams, 28, of Baltimore; staff sergeant, Marine Corps. Williams was killed Thursday when a homemade bomb exploded as he tried to defuse it in Iraq’s Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan.
