Goalie’s injury a concern

Ducks goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov was examined by team doctors Monday to determine the severity of the injury in his lower body after he left during the third period of Sunday’s 3-2 loss to the Kings.

Team officials said the results of Bryzgalov’s examination would not be available until after today’s practice at Anaheim Ice, although the team is looking at the possibility of recalling goaltender Michael Wall from its American Hockey League team in Portland, Maine.

General Manager Brian Burke was at the NHL’s Board of Governors meetings Monday and unavailable for comment.

Bryzgalov appeared to aggravate an injury, believed to be to his groin, when he stretched to make a save on the Kings’ Alexander Frolov as the forward went in on a breakaway. The 26-year-old backup goalie first injured his groin during practice Nov. 20 and sat out five games before returning last week.

Thought to be a challenger for the starting job going into training camp, Bryzgalov has posted solid numbers -- .909 save percentage, 2.19 goals-against average -- but has failed to go the distance in three of his seven starts this season because of injury or ineffectiveness.

The Ducks had a similar issue with Jean-Sebastien Giguere early last season. Giguere was forced to leave a game against Vancouver after coming back too soon from hamstring and groin problems.

Corey Perry can’t help but feel as though he’s on the outside looking in.

The second-year right wing has not scored a goal in his last 11 games and has only three assists during that span. Linemate Ryan Getzlaf has five goals over that stretch, though four have come on the power play.

“It has been tough,” said Perry, who has five goals and 16 points. “I’m expected to contribute. I’ve just got to work hard in practice and keep shooting the puck. If I keep doing that, hopefully good things will come.”
