Rangers hold off the Senators

Jaromir Jagr and Martin Straka each had a goal and an assist, and Henrik Lundqvist made 34 saves in the New York Rangers’ 3-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday at Ottawa.

Straka scored during a two-man advantage in the first period and Jagr struck in the second to help the Rangers beat the Senators for only the third time in 13 games. New York hadn’t won in Ottawa since March 21, 2002.

Brendan Shanahan scored his 22nd goal into an empty net for New York. The Rangers won their second straight game after dropping four in a row.

Jason Spezza had a power-play goal for Ottawa. After winning four straight games and eight of nine, the Senators have lost two in a row.

Ray Emery stopped 26 shots for Ottawa, which played without captain Daniel Alfredsson (hip) and defenseman Wade Redden (chest).

New Jersey 5, Boston 1 -- Jay Pandolfo and Jamie Langenbrunner scored first-period goals and Martin Brodeur made 19 saves at Boston to lead the Devils to their season-high, fifth straight win.

The Devils’ winning streak came after a season-high, four-game losing streak.

Eric Rasmussen, Patrik Elias and Sergei Brylin scored third-period goals for the Devils after the Bruins cut their deficit to 2-1.

Pittsburgh 4, Atlanta 3 -- Colby Armstrong scored 3:51 into overtime at Atlanta, and the Penguins ended a four-game losing streak.

Armstrong scored on a wrist shot in front of the net on a pass from rookie Evgeni Malkin, who had a goal and two assists.

Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist as the Penguins avoided matching their longest losing streak of the season.

Washington 5, Philadelphia 3 -- Bryan Muir scored the go-ahead goal at 7:40 of the third period to help lift the Capitals at Philadelphia.

Muir scored on a one-timer from between the circles for the Capitals, who bounced back after their four-game winning streak was ended by the Ducks on Friday.

Buffalo 3, Montreal 2 -- Tomas Vanek drove a slap shot past goalie Cristobal Huet on the Sabres’ second shot in the shootout to lead them at Montreal.

Alex Kovalev beat Ryan Miller with a backhand on Montreal’s first shot, and Sabres co-captain Daniel Briere put a shot through Huet’s pads to even it.

But Miller made a pad save to deny Canadiens captain Saku Koivu’s backhand attempt, and then stopped Sergei Samsonov to give Buffalo its fourth win in six games.

N.Y. Islanders 5, Florida 4 -- Miroslav Satan and Viktor Kozlov scored in the shootout as the Islanders came from behind to win at Uniondale, N.Y.

Ville Peltonen and Rostislav Olesz both missed against Rick DiPietro, enabling the Islanders to earn their 15th win of the season (15-11-3).

Andy Hilbert, Arron Asham, Radek Martinek and Miroslav Satan scored for the Islanders, who got 28 saves from DiPietro.

Columbus 5, St. Louis 1 -- Sergei Fedorov had two goals and an assist, and Fredrik Norrena came within a shot of posting his third consecutive shutout in the Blue Jackets’ win at St. Louis.

Norrena stopped 24 shots, giving up only Bill Guerin’s team-leading 12th goal with about seven minutes left of the second period during a 5-on-3 power play. The goal ended Norrena’s team-record shutout streak at 155 minutes 28 seconds.

Detroit 5, Toronto 1 -- Henrik Zetterberg and Mikael Samuelsson each scored two of the Red Wings’ season-high five power-play goals in the victory at Detroit.

Dan Cleary had a goal and an assist for Detroit, which won its fifth in six games. Mathieu Schneider and Pavel Datsyuk each had three assists, and Tomas Holmstrom two. Dominik Hasek stopped 21 shots.

Minnesota 5, Chicago 4 -- Mark Parrish’s slump-busting hat trick, including the winner in overtime with 1:42 left, lifted the Wild at St. Paul, Minn.

Parrish scored on a bad-angle backhander that sneaked underneath goalie Brian Boucher’s arm.

The Wild forward also had two power-play goals in regulation, and Pavol Demitra had a goal and two assists in his return to the Minnesota lineup.

Dallas 4, Phoenix 3 -- Jere Lehtinen scored the winning goal with 4.6 seconds left in overtime to give the Stars a victory at Glendale, Ariz. The goal, Lehtinen’s second of the game, stood after a video review.

Calgary 5, Vancouver 3 -- Jarome Iginla had a goal and two assists to lead the Flames at Calgary, Canada. Calgary earned its ninth straight home win, which ties a club record.

San Jose 3, Nashville 1 -- Jonathan Cheechoo scored two goals on assists from Joe Thornton at San Jose, and the Sharks ended a two-game losing streak.
