Beach sequel: Return of the elephant seals

Friday-March 31: It’s prime time. Starting Friday, visitors to Ano Nuevo State Reserve can take guided walks to get a glimpse of the elephant seals that come ashore. Breeding season begins in December, when the first males arrive. The bulls, which can be as long as 16 feet and weigh as much as 2 1/2 tons, battle it out for dominance. Pups usually come along in late December, according to state park information. Tours are daily through March 31. Groups of no more than 20 leave every 15 minutes from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Guests should set aside about two hours for the entire tour, officials say. Reservations are recommended.

Dec. 30: Deer Valley ends the holidays with a string of lights down Bald Eagle Mountain. The resort’s Torchlight Parade is at dusk. Participants glide down Big Stick ski run. Visitors gather on the upper deck of Snow Park Lodge for free cider, cookies and the best view.
