Two killed, one hurt in Santa Ana shooting
A suspected gang-related shooting in Santa Ana on Sunday afternoon left two people dead and a third critically wounded, police said.
Police said the three victims, described as teen boys or young men, were found slumped near one another on a sidewalk on the 200 block of East Camille Street. “It looked like they probably were congregating together, talking,” said Victor Standke, a police spokesman.
He said a neighborhood resident called police about 4:30 p.m. to report hearing shots.
Standke said investigators soon discovered the victims but weren’t able to learn much from residents.
Paramedics pronounced two of the victims, both with multiple wounds to the head and upper torso, dead at the scene.
The third, wounded in his upper body, was taken in critical condition to a hospital and was undergoing surgery late Sunday.
Other details remained sketchy. It was unclear, Standke said, whether the incident was a drive-by shooting or if the assailant approached the victims on foot.
Police also had not determined how many shots were fired.
The scene of the shooting is an ethnically mixed neighborhood of single-family homes and apartments just southeast of Santa Ana’s downtown.
Standke said it was not considered a “known, hard-core gang” neighborhood.
