Corrections chief was on target
Re “Ex-prison chiefs tell of frustrations,” Dec. 21
Former state Corrections Secretary Jeanne Woodford described her agenda for the department: reform of the parole system, more education and drug treatment programs for inmates, a fresh look at who goes to prison and for how long. That was almost one year ago. These goals were absolutely on target.
With Woodford’s leadership and the governor’s support, we could have been on our way to solving some of the problems that are now plaguing California’s prison system.
I would hope that Woodford and her predecessor, Roderick Q. Hickman, are on the governor’s short list of members and consultants for the sentencing commission that has just been created. They could contribute a widened perspective that would enable the commission to encompass all issues of prison reform.
