The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan and Iraq:

Garrison C. Avery, 23, of Lincoln, Neb.; first lieutenant, Army. Avery was among three soldiers killed Wednesday by a roadside bomb that exploded near their Humvee in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Felipe C. Barbosa, 21, of High Point, N.C.; corporal, Marine Corps. Barbosa was killed Jan. 28 in a nonhostile vehicle accident in Fallouja, Iraq, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Billy D. Brixey Jr., 21, of Ferriday, La.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Brixey died Jan. 27 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany of wounds suffered Jan. 25 when a roadside bomb exploded near his convoy in Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. As part of Operation Enduring Freedom, his unit was attached to the 3rd Marine Logistics Group, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan.

Marlon A. Bustamante, 25, of Corona, N.Y.; specialist, Army. Bustamante was among three soldiers killed Wednesday by a roadside bomb that exploded near their Humvee in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Sean T. Cardelli, 20, of Downers Grove, Ill.; private first class, Marine Corps. Cardelli was killed Wednesday by small-arms fire during combat near Fallouja, Iraq, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton. As part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, his unit was attached to the 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

David L. Herrera, 26, of Oceanside; sergeant, Army. Herrera was killed Jan. 28 by a roadside bomb that exploded near his Humvee during combat in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Walter B. Howard II, 35, of Rochester, Mich.; specialist, Army. Howard died Thursday in Balad, Iraq, of injuries suffered earlier that day when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Abrams tank in Ashraf, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Carson, Colo.

Hugo R. Lopez, 20, of La Habra; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Lopez died Jan. 27 at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio of injuries suffered Nov. 20 when an improvised explosive device detonated near him during combat in Rawah, Iraq, near the Syrian border. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton. As part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, his unit was attached to the 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

Scott A. Messer, 26, of Ashland, Ky.; private first class, Army. Messer was killed Thursday when his Humvee rolled over during a convoy in Ashraf, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 32nd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Anthony C. Owens, 21, of Conway, S.C.; specialist, Army. Owens was killed Wednesday when his unit was attacked with grenades and small-arms fire in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Brian J. Schoff, 22, of Manchester, Tenn.; private first class, Army. Schoff died Jan. 28 when a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Caesar S. Viglienzone, 21, of Santa Rosa, Calif.; private first class, Army. Viglienzone was among three soldiers killed Wednesday by a roadside bomb that exploded near their Humvee in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, Ky.
