Cougars Beat Huskies Again
Washington State rallied to defeat No. 16 Washington, 77-64, Saturday at Pullman, sweeping the Huskies for the first time in 12 years.
The Cougars, 10-9 overall, 3-7 Pac-10, overcame a 35-30 halftime deficit by turning up the defensive pressure and forcing turnovers. They opened the second half with an 11-0 run.
Washington (16-5, 5-5) lost its third consecutive conference game despite a 21-point, nine-rebound effort by Brandon Roy. Justin Dentmon scored 13 of his 14 points in the first half.
Aron Baynes scored 13 points and had a career-high 12 rebounds, and Robbie Cowgill also scored 13 points for the Cougars, who upset then-No. 10 Washington in Seattle on Jan. 7. It was the Cougars’ first sweep of their cross-state rivals since 1993-94.
The victory came in front of 8,770, the largest crowd at Friel Court since Feb. 8, 1996, when the Cougars beat Oregon State.
Stanford 71, Oregon State 64 -- Chris Hernandez had 22 of his 28 points in the second half at Corvallis, Ore., to lead the Cardinal, which has won six in a row and eight of its last nine.
Stanford (12-7, 8-3) won despite losing leading scorer Matt Haryasz to a first-half injury. He was poked in the eye and left the game. With the eye swollen shut, Haryasz, averaging 19.3 points a game, didn’t return.
With Haryasz out, Hernandez carried the load on offense, making seven of 10 shots. He made a three-point basket and a 15-foot shot to give the Cardinal a comfortable lead with 1:30 left.
Nick DeWitz bounced back from two terrible games to score 17 off the bench for the Beavers (10-12, 3-8), who lost for the fifth consecutive time. DeWitz was replaced by Sasa Cuic in the starting lineup after scoring only six points in two games.
California 62, Oregon 60 -- The Golden Bears clinched the victory by making six of seven free throws in the final 43 seconds, including one by Theo Robertson with four seconds left to give them a 62-59 lead.
It was the fourth consecutive win for the Golden Bears (14-6, 8-3), who improved to 5-2 on the road in conference games this season.
Leon Powe had 15 points and nine rebounds for Cal, falling one rebound short of his seventh straight double-double.
Powe’s basket with 3:42 to play gave Cal a 53-47 lead and stopped a 7-2 run by Oregon (10-13, 4-7). He then made an 18-foot jumper with 1:28 to play after the Ducks had cut their deficit to 54-51.
