It didn’t take long for Doug Weight to make a contribution for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Weight, playing in his second game since being acquired from St. Louis, scored the winning goal in the shootout to lift the surging Hurricanes to a 4-3 victory over the Bruins on Sunday at Boston.

Carolina goalie Martin Gerber, who stopped three shots during the shootout, stuffed a Sergei Samsonov attempt to secure the win. He had 24 saves in regulation and overtime.

Carolina improved to 5-1 in shootouts, and Boston fell to 0-5.

Eric Staal had a goal and an assist and Cory Stillman added two assists for the Hurricanes, who improved to 2-1-0 on their four-game trip.

Brad Stuart forced overtime when he took a pass from P.J. Axelsson and fired a slap shot to the left of Gerber 17:55 into the third period.

Montreal 5, Philadelphia 0 -- Cristobal Huet recorded his second shutout in as many days, and Michael Ryder got his first career hat trick for the Canadiens at Montreal.

Huet, who got his first Montreal shutout in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Boston, made 25 saves to win consecutive games for the first time since March 9-10, 2004, when he was with the Kings.

Philadelphia lost its third in a row.
