Australia proved its depth was better than Switzerland’s when Chris Guccione beat George Bastl, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (7), in the final rubber to win, 3-2, in a best-of-five first-round Davis Cup match Sunday at Geneva to secure a quarterfinal berth.

Australia joined defending champion Croatia, along with Argentina, Belarus, Chile, France and Russia, which clinched berths Saturday. The U.S. also clinched Sunday.

The Swiss evened the tie against Australia when Stanislas Wawrinka, playing for the third day in a row, defeated Peter Luczak, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7 (7), 6-2.

Australia played without injured Lleyton Hewitt. Switzerland’s Roger Federer sat out the first-round match.

In its first quarterfinal since 1982, Chile will face the U.S.

“The dream of beating the United States as visitors is very high,” said Chile’s Nicolas Massu. “I hope they present their best team -- Agassi, Roddick. I want the best, to win and make history.”
