Re “Cheney Shoots Fellow Hunter,” Feb. 13

For more than 24 hours, the White House withheld the news of the shooting by Vice President Dick Cheney of his hunting buddy. When was the White House planning to tell the American people what had happened? If not for the small, local newspaper breaking the story, would this shooting victim’s name and information have been “deleted” from hospital records? We have all read about many (unfortunate) hunting accidents in which local law enforcement routinely create an “accident” scene or a “crime” scene, the shooter is held or released on bond pending an investigation, and eventually either no charges are filed or charges are brought. Where are the photos from the vice president’s official staff photographer? Exactly who is investigating this shooting, and why is the powerful, politically connected ranch owner the only person initially quoted in an important story that is making headlines around the world?

Don’t worry, Mr. Cheney. I know when you shot that guy you were only exercising your constitutional rights.
