Hit the trail in the right shoe for you

Share

Chances are, if you like running, you’ll love trail running. The softer, off-road surface reduces the force of impact, and the uneven terrain strengthens legs, ankles and feet in a way that pavement does not. Trail running shoes typically feature wide, studded soles for enhanced grip, rock-resistant toe bumpers and exteriors, and dirt-masking colors. Below are four models to consider when you head for the hills.

Comfort at the fore

Keen Ochoco: Uniquely comfortable asymmetrical lacing system.

Likes: As comfy as a slipper because of the wide toe box and off-center laces. The shoe allows toes to spread wider than other shoes, without jamming in the front of the shoe on steep descents. The result is a very tactile trail feel for those who land on their forefoot. Feels -- and is -- light at 12 3/4 ounces.

Dislikes: Heel is a bit too elevated. Although the front end is perfect, the rear feels clunky.

Feeling the trail

Brooks Cascadia: Great all-around shoe that “reads” the trail well.

Likes: Best overall tactile feel -- the entire foot is nested low to the ground, allowing it to hug the terrain. Thin fabric upper is comfortable and cool for hot-weather running. Weighs only 13 1/2 ounces.

Dislikes: Lacks a fabric loop on heel (found on the Tecnica and Keen), which speeds the shoe putting-on process and is convenient for carrying.

Price: $90. (800) 227-6657; www.brookssports.com.

Tough guy

Montrail Hardrock: Burly shoe designed to protect you on rough trails.

Likes: Plentiful armor on the front and sides guards against overgrowth on primitive trails. Hard nylon plate in sole stops stone bruises, yet is quite flexible, encouraging a fast pace. Highly studded sole grips well on all surfaces.

Dislikes: Heavy at 14 1/4 ounces. No heel loop.

Price: $95. (800) 826-1598; www.montrail.com.

Dirt cheap

Tecnica Tricon TR: Competent trail runner at a great price.

Likes: Good all-around shoe with comfortable, wide toe box. Mesh upper keeps foot cool. Fiberglas sheet under the forefoot protects against rocks. Weighs only 13 1/2 ounces.

Dislikes: None.

Price: $80. (800) 258-3897; www.tecnicausa.com.
