Federal agents arrested a Fresno County man suspected of stealing more than 40 pounds of high explosives and more than 700 electrical detonators, all of which were recovered, authorities announced Sunday.

Jay Dillard Montgomery, 26, was arrested Friday night, one day after the explosives were reported stolen from O’Leary Exploratory Services in Fresno County, said Marti McKee, a spokeswoman for the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Montgomery, who was arrested at an undisclosed location in Kings County, will be arraigned Tuesday in federal court on charges of possession of stolen explosives, theft of explosives and being a felon in possession of explosives.

McKee said the ATF could not comment on Montgomery’s motive or other details of the case. “Because it’s an open investigation, we’re very restricted right now in what we can say,” she said, adding that the explosives were taken sometime between Wednesday and Thursday.
