Army Commander Quits Over Beating Scandal

The commander of the Colombian army resigned after recent allegations that 21 soldiers were assaulted by superiors.
Four instructors were arrested and several officers were implicated in the scandal at a military base in Piedras, 60 miles west of the capital, Bogota.
Gen. Reinaldo Castellanos told local W Radio he resigned because his superiors “told me I have to quit.”
Rookie soldiers told a news magazine that they were beaten, branded with hot pokers and even sexually assaulted.
