Watch Over Me Eyes Win

Watch Over Me has made only 10 starts in a career that began in 2003, but the 5-year-old Smokester gelding has been consistent.

Owned by the Kagele Brothers Inc. and trained by Mike Machowsky, the California bred has won three of his races and has been second or third on five other occasions.

Two of his victories have come at Santa Anita and he will be looking for another victory in the seventh race today in Arcadia. He is one of six scheduled to go six furlongs in the $50,000 optional claimer for state breds.

Bred by Always Believe, Inc., Watch Over Me broke his maiden at Santa Anita on Oct. 3, 2004, then returned four weeks later to win an optional claimer by 1 1/2 lengths as the 7-10 favorite. Martin Pedroza, who was aboard for his last win on Nov. 20 at Hollywood Park, has the call today.

His opponents include Cigar Pal, who will be making his first start since he beat maidens by two lengths in his only start for trainer Julio Canani on Dec. 15, 2004. David Flores will ride the 5-year-old son of Benchmark for a partnership and the chestnut has trained swiftly for his comeback. His last three works -- 59 2/5 , 58 4/5 and 34 4/5 from the gate -- were all best of the morning drills.

Race of the day: Baghdaria will bid for her fourth consecutive victory as she takes on 12 other 3-year-old fillies in the $50,000 Martha Washington today at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark. Monte Berry will ride the daughter of Royal Academy, who will be making her local debut, for owners Wayne Sanders and Larry Hirsch and trainer William Bret Calhoun in the one-mile race.

One for the road: Paparazzi goes first off the claim for trainer Mike Mitchell and can win for the 12th time in 43 lifetime starts in today’s sixth at Gulfstream Park. Eddie Castro will ride the 7-year-old Press Card gelding for Landman Racing in the $32,000 claimer at one mile. Paparazzi, who was claimed for the same price on Feb. 6, has won four of 11 at the trip and has won three of seven at Gulfstream.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using all in the sixth, Cigar Pal in the seventh and Silk Kerchief, Janzig Moon and Spy Aly in the eighth.
