Student Pilot Killed, Instructor Hurt in Crash
A 25-year-old student pilot was killed and a flight instructor critically injured Saturday when their helicopter crashed in a remote wash west of Interstate 5, authorities said.
The helicopter, which had taken off from Van Nuys Airport, came down about 2:30 p.m. after hitting power lines in an area off Highway 126, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department said.
It was not clear who was at the controls, authorities said. The instructor, who suffered head injuries, was airlifted to County-USC Medical Center. The victims’ names were not released.
