Oregon’s Brooks Is Key to Win

Aaron Brooks scored a season-high 19 points to lead Oregon past Oregon State, 70-64, in the Pacific 10 Conference opener for each team at Eugene, Ore., on Saturday.

Brooks gave the Ducks (7-6, 1-0) a 62-60 lead with 1:42 to play, and his layup with 40 seconds left gave them a 64-60 advantage.

Maarty Leunen finished off the victory by scoring five of his eight points in the last 26 seconds. Reserve forward Ivan Johnson scored 13 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds for Oregon.

Chris Stephens led the Beavers (7-5, 0-1) with 14 points.

It was Oregon State’s 13th straight conference road loss. The Beavers haven’t won a Pac-10 opener on the road since the 1992-93 season.

Washington State 64, Arizona State 49 -- Kyle Weaver scored 15 points and Derrick Low had 13 to lead the Cougars (8-3, 1-1) over the Sun Devils (6-5, 0-2) at Pullman, Wash.

Kevin Kruger led Arizona State with 23 points. No other Sun Devil had more than seven.

Washington State converted 20 of 26 free throws, compared to seven of 10 for Arizona State. The Cougars made all 11 of their free throws in the final six minutes.
