Arizona Loses at Corvallis

Nick DeWitz had 20 points on seven-of-nine shooting and Oregon State lost a 22-point second-half lead before holding off No. 24 Arizona, 75-65, on Thursday night at Corvallis, Ore.

Chris Stephens and Sasa Cuic each added 13 points for the Beavers, 9-6 overall and 2-2 in the Pacific 10 Conference. Oregon State outscored Arizona, 14-4, over the final four minutes after the Wildcats had rallied to tie it.

Hassan Adams had 22 points and five steals and Mustafa Shakur added 17 points for the Wildcats (10-5, 3-2).

The Beavers scored the first 14 points. . By the time Arizona called a timeout with 11:49 left in the half, Oregon State was up, 20-4, had made nine of 10 shots and had a 6-1 rebounding advantage.

The Beavers made 12 of their first 14 shots and led by as many as 23 points in the first half, with Arizona getting within 41-24 on a three-point basket by Shakur.

The Wildcats played pressure defense after halftime and got back in the game after trailing, 46-24.

Arizona went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 55-44 on Shakur’s three-point play. Less than two minutes later, after a turnover by Jason Fontenet, Adams finished a fastbreak with a dunk that got Arizona within seven.

Shakur completed another three-point play to cut the lead to 61-59, and the junior point guard tied the game with a scoop shot with four minutes to go.

Oregon 67, Arizona State 53 -- Aaron Brooks had 19 points to lead the short-handed Ducks (8-8, 2-2) past the Sun Devils (6-8, 0-5) at Eugene, Ore.

Malik Hairston added 16 points for the Ducks and scored seven straight during a 13-5 run late in the second half that increased Oregon’s lead from 51-44 to 64-49 with 3:25 to play.

Bryce Taylor also scored 14 for the Ducks, playing without starting forward Maarty Leunen (ankle injury) and reserve forward Ivan Johnson (team suspension).

Antwi Atuahene scored 21 to lead the Sun Devils.
