Canadiens Cool Off Stars, 4-2

Mike Ribeiro had two goals, and the Montreal Canadiens scored on their first three power-play opportunities to beat Dallas, 4-2, Monday night at Montreal and end the Stars’ season-high six-game winning streak.

Alex Kovalev scored on the man advantage and Michael Ryder had an even-strength goal for Montreal, which won for the second time in two games since General Manager Bob Gainey fired coach Claude Julien on Saturday and replaced him behind the bench.

The Canadiens converted on four of five chances with the man advantage in Gainey’s Canadien coaching debut, a 6-2 win Saturday over San Jose. They were three for seven against Dallas and are seven for 12 overall with Gainey behind the bench.

Jan Bulis and Radek Bonk each assisted on both of Ribeiro’s first-period, power-play goals.

Niklas Hagman and Antti Miettinen scored for Dallas, which failed to register a standings point for the first time in eight games since a 3-2 loss to the Kings on Dec. 31.

Vancouver 4, Pittsburgh 2 -- Todd Bertuzzi’s fourth goal in two games gave the Canucks a two-goal lead, and Henrik Sedin sealed it with a power-play score in the third period at Pittsburgh to send the Penguins to their seventh consecutive loss.

Washington 6, Phoenix 1 -- Alex Ovechkin scored two goals at Glendale, Ariz., the second while rolling on the ice, and the Capitals won consecutive road games for the first time all season.

San Jose 3, Tampa Bay 1 -- Kyle McLaren, rookie Milan Michalek and Nils Ekman scored at San Jose to lead the Sharks to their sixth victory in seven games. Joe Thornton had two assists.

Ottawa 6, Minnesota 1 -- Patrick Eaves had two goals and an assist for the Senators at St. Paul, Minn. Playing his first NHL game in his home state, Eaves had the first multipoint game of his career.

Columbus 4, New York Rangers 3 -- Rick Nash’s breakaway goal late in the third period lifted the Blue Jackets at Columbus, Ohio. Jaromir Jagr, the league’s leading scorer, was held pointless.

Buffalo 3, Edmonton 1 -- Maxim Afinogenov had a goal and assist in the third period to lead the Sabres past the Oilers at Edmonton, Canada.
