Weekend box office

Talk about close. The Weinstein Co., corroborated by several competitors, on Monday proclaimed “Hoodwinked” as the young company’s first No. 1 opening, followed closely by Disney’s “Glory Road.” Come Tuesday morning, however, when actual figures for Monday came in, the Disney college basketball heart-tugger had barely eclipsed the animated retelling of Little Red Riding Hood for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday weekend. Given that what studios refer to as “actuals” are “actually” based on a reliable sampling of about 75% of the nation’s theaters, the movies are effectively too close to call, but the Weinstein Co. conceded its film was about $50,000 behind Disney’s movie.
