Third baseman Chipper Jones returned to the Atlanta Braves’ lineup on Wednesday, but reliever Chris Reitsma learned he will need season-ending surgery.

Jones and the team’s medical staff were encouraged after his visit with Dr. John Gleason.

Earlier reads of Jones’ MRI showed he had a partial tear of the plantar plate of his right second toe and an inflamed ligament. Gleason found inflammation but no tear, trainer Jeff Porter said.

Reitsma will seek a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., on July 17, according to Porter.

Porter said Andrews would help determine if Reitsma needs Tommy John surgery, which would keep the right-hander out for a year, or an ulnar nerve transposition procedure, which would keep him out about six months.
