Grimsley Near Deal in Dispute

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Jason Grimsley are close to settling their compensation dispute, with both parties agreeing to donate the remainder of the pitcher’s salary to charity, according to sources close to the negotiation.

Grimsley asked for and was granted his release June 7, one day after federal agents raided his Scottsdale, Ariz., home searching for evidence of illegal performance-enhancing drugs. He had previously cooperated with agents after receiving two “kits” of human growth hormone, and later admitted to possessing and using steroids, amphetamines and HGH.

As a released player, Grimsley was due the remainder of his $825,000 annual salary. He subsequently was suspended without pay for 50 games for violating the league’s joint drug agreement.

Pedro Martinez was put on the 15-day disabled list by the New York Mets because of pain in his right hip. Martinez (7-4) skipped his scheduled start Monday and can now rest through the All-Star break. He was chosen for the National League team but will not participate.... The Cincinnati Reds, struggling in the bullpen, acquired former All-Star closer Eddie Guardado from the Seattle Mariners for minor league pitcher Travis Chick. After Wednesday night’s game in Milwaukee, Reds reliever Brian Shackelford was arrested on suspicion of third-degree sexual assault. Upon his release from jail, the Reds optioned him to triple-A Louisville. The Reds also activated third baseman Edwin Encarnacion from the 15-day disabled list and designated outfielder Quinton McCracken for assignment.

Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Jon Lieber, out for more than a month because of a groin injury, was activated and will start tonight against Pittsburgh.... The Baltimore Orioles designated outfielder Luis Matos for assignment and purchased the contract of outfielder Luis Terrero from triple-A Ottawa.
