Wariner Rolls in the 400 to Win in a Time of 43.62

World and Olympic champion Jeremy Wariner ran the fourth-fastest 400 meters in history with a time of 43.62 seconds at the Golden Gala meet at Rome on Friday.

The eagerly awaited duel in the 400 with fellow American Xavier Carter, who on Tuesday ran the second-fastest 200 meters ever, never materialized when Wariner pulled away heading into the final half, to win by more than a second.

In the women’s 100, Marion Jones lost for the first time this season, but her time of 10.91 was her best in four years. Jamaica’s Sherone Simpson won in 10.87.

Elsewhere, Asafa Powell matched Maurice Greene’s meet record in the men’s 100 with a time of 9.85.

Meanwhile, Justin Gatlin pulled out of the London Grand Prix because of a leg injury, postponing his 100-meter showdown with Powell, the co-world-record holder.

PRO BASKETBALL

Bosh Signs Three-Year Extension With Raptors

Chris Bosh signed a three-year contract extension with the Toronto Raptors beginning in 2007-08, with a player option for a fourth year.

The exact value of Bosh’s contract will not be known until the next salary cap is set in July 2007, but based on some cap projections, it could be worth about $63 million over four years.

After acquiring Peja Stojakovic to start at shooting guard, the New Orleans Hornets traded guard Kirk Snyder to the Houston Rockets for cash and a conditional second-round draft pick in 2008. The Hornets also finalized a trade by sending veteran forward P.J. Brown and guard J.R. Smith to Chicago for center Tyson Chandler.

Kings Sign Draft Pick Lewis to a Contract

Center Trevor Lewis, a first-round pick by the Kings in the NHL draft, signed a three-year contract believed to worth $1.8 million plus a signing bonus.

Lewis, the 17th player taken in the draft, was one of two first-round picks by the Kings. Lewis, 19, had 75 points in 56 regular-season games with Des Moines of the United States Hockey League last season.

The Pittsburgh Penguins rounded out their management staff by naming Chuck Fletcher assistant general manager.

Fletcher, 39, spent the last four years in the Ducks organization, where he served as director of hockey operations and vice president of amateur scouting.

The Ducks also signed wingers Pierre Parenteau and Shawn Thornton to one-year contracts.

Murray Wins Twice to Reach Semifinals

Top-seeded Andy Murray won a pair of matches to advance to the semifinals at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships at Newport, R.I.

Murray completed a rain-delayed second-round match by beating Sam Querrey, 7-5, 6-2. Just over an hour later, Murray dominated Robert Kendrick, 6-0, 6-0.

Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko beat Nicolas Massu, 6-4, 6-3, to reach the semifinals of the Swedish Open at Bastad. He will next play Agustin Calleri, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Robin Soderling.... Richard Gasquet beat defending champion Gaston Gaudio, 6-3, 6-2, in the Swiss Open quarterfinals, and top-seeded Ivan Ljubicic was eliminated, 7-6 (4), 6-3, by Feliciano Lopez at Gstaad.

Newman Wins His Second Pole of Season

Ryan Newman won his second pole of the season with a lap of 129.683 mph and will start up front for Sunday’s Nextel Cup Series Lenox Industrial Tools 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon.

Jeff Burton was the runner-up at 129.651, followed by Brian Vickers at 129.626, Kyle Busch at 129.485, defending race winner Tony Stewart at 129.024, series points leader Jimmie Johnson at 128.994 and Jeff Gordon, last week’s winner at Chicagoland Speedway, at 128.976.

Dan Wheldon turned a lap of 203.293 mph at Nashville Superspeedway in Gladeville, Tenn., and won the pole for tonight’s Firestone Indy 200.

USC Men’s Basketball Opens at Home Nov. 16

The USC men’s basketball team will play South Carolina on Nov. 16 in a home opener that will mark its first game in the Galen Center, the Trojans’ new arena.

The team’s 2006-07 schedule also includes games at Kansas on Dec. 4 and against George Washington in the Wooden Classic on Dec. 9.

The first game between USC and UCLA at the Galen Center will be Jan. 13.

Texas men’s basketball Coach Rick Barnes got a $500,000 raise after taking the Longhorns to a regional final of the NCAA tournament. Barnes’ salary is now $1.8 million.... Oregon State baseball Coach Pat Casey got a new 10-year contract from the school. Casey led the Beavers to the national championship last month.

Lovieanne Jung hit a grand slam to break open a scoreless game and lead the United States to a 6-1 victory over Canada in the World Cup of Softball at Oklahoma City. The victory for the Americans (2-0) avenged a 2-1 loss to Canada (0-2) exactly one year earlier in the opening round of last year’s tournament.

Jason Lezak won the men’s 100-meter freestyle with the fastest time by an American this year and Natalie Coughlin took the women’s 100 in the Janet Evans Invitational at USC.

Lezak won in 49.04 seconds -- the fourth-fastest time in the world this year. Coughlin led from the start in her race and won in a time of 54.28.
