Girl, 20 Months, Killed in Driveway Accident

A 20-month-old girl was killed after being run over by her uncle’s car while he was backing out of a driveway in the 1300 block of West 251st Street, police said.

Los Angeles Police Department officials said the uncle, who was not identified, told officers that he saw the toddler before he started backing up but also knew that her father was nearby and assumed he had gotten her out of the way of his vehicle. The father said he tried to warn the uncle that the girl was still in the uncle’s path but was unable to do it in time. The accident occurred shortly after noon Saturday.

Police said they believed the case was an accident and were not planning to file criminal charges, but that they alerted the county Department of Children and Family Services in case the agency wanted to review it as a possible case of child neglect.
