New York 8, at Texas 7: Jason Giambi hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning and the Yankees completed a three-game sweep. After the Rangers scored four times in the eighth to go ahead, 7-6, Derek Jeter led off the ninth with a single against closer Akinori Otsuka (2-4). Giambi followed with his 29th homer, a towering shot that landed in the seats in right. With the win, the Yankees moved half a game ahead of Minnesota and the Chicago White Sox in the wild-card chase.

Baltimore 4, at Kansas City 3: Adam Loewen earned his first career victory and Jeff Conine homered in his first four-hit game of the season. Loewen, a 22-year-old left-hander from Canada making his seventh big league start, held the Royals to one run and six hits over five-plus innings. He struck out five and walked three.

at Oakland 5, Boston 1: Frank Thomas homered twice and drove in four runs to help Dan Haren win for the first time in six weeks and the Athletics avoided a three-game sweep. It marked the second two-homer game this season for Thomas and the 28th of his career.

Detroit 4, at Cleveland 1: Rookie Justin Verlander (13-4) outpitched C.C. Sabathia, striking out a career-high eight and gave up one run and five hits with no walks in 6 2/3 innings. Verlander is 6-0 in his last eight starts.

at Seattle 7, Toronto 4: Jamie Moyer pitched into the sixth inning for his first win in a month. Moyer, who had last won June 24 at San Diego, got plenty of offensive help as the Mariners took two of three from the Blue Jays.
