Galaxy’s Futility Grows

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The Galaxy continued sinking to new lows Wednesday after another shutout loss, this one a 1-0 defeat to the Colorado Rapids at Denver’s Invesco Field.

Not only did the Galaxy see its club-record scoring drought reach 480 minutes, but L.A. also finished the month of May without a goal and tied a franchise mark with its fifth consecutive loss.

A shutout loss at Houston on Saturday would push the Galaxy’s offensive futility to 570 minutes and break the MLS mark of 557 set last season by expansion Real Salt Lake.

On Wednesday, the defending MLS Cup champion couldn’t muster many chances on offense against Colorado (4-3-2) and saw Dedi Ben-Dayan score his first goal of the season in the 33rd minute after he volleyed in a corner kick by Terry Cooke.

L.A. also suffered its second consecutive shutout loss to Colorado goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul, who blanked the Galaxy (2-7-1) on May 20 at the Home Depot Center.

All seven of the Galaxy’s losses this season have been shutouts and the team has scored six goals in 10 games. The Galaxy is tied with Chivas USA with a league-low seven points although Chivas has played three fewer games.

The closest the Galaxy came to scoring Wednesday was on a near-defensive gaffe by the Rapids.

In the closing minutes, a Galaxy cross into the box deflected off defender Mike Petke and headed toward the goal before it was smothered by Coundoul.

D.C. United 5, Columbus 1 -- Jaime Moreno scored his 100th MLS goal, becoming the second player in league history to reach the milestone, and United (6-1-3) increased its lead atop the Eastern Conference standings with a rout of the Crew (3-4-2) at Washington.

Moreno reached the century mark with a penalty kick in the eighth minute, joining Real Salt Lake’s Jason Kreis (103) as the league’s only triple-digit scorers.

United scored an own goal off the foot of Ezra Hendrickson in the second half, and Joshua Gros, Alecko Eskandarian and Lucio Filomeno also scored as the East leaders extended their unbeaten streak to four games and moved eight points ahead of second-place Kansas City.

Joseph Ngwenya scored in the first half for the Crew.
