For two days, a 200-pound black bear had been scooting up trees, across roofs and over fences in Altadena, eluding capture and occasionally stopping for a nap.

That ended about 4 p.m. Monday when the bear was spotted in a tree at Palm Street and Ewing Avenue.

“They were able to hit it with some tranquilizer darts,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Robert Lopez.

“The bear scooted across the top of a house and to another tree and climbed down. That’s where it collapsed.”

The bear hunt began Sunday afternoon when an Altadena resident on Coolidge Avenue called police to say the bear was in his backyard.

California Department of Fish and Game officials missed hitting the bear with tranquilizers, and it was off and running.

The bear was spotted again Monday. This time, Fish and Game officials were successful with their tranquilizers.

Lopez said the bear was transferred to a holding facility, and would be released deep in the Angeles National Forest.
