Claude Terrail, 88; His Paris Restaurant Fed the Rich, Famous

Claude Terrail, 88, owner of the Paris culinary landmark La Tour d’Argent, died June 1, said the restaurant’s chef, Jean-Francois Sicallac.

Terrail succeeded his father in 1947 as head of the restaurant, known for its duck specialties, vast wine cellar and spectacular view of the River Seine.

The restaurant, which traces its origins to the 16th century, has fed such notables as Queen Elizabeth II, President Kennedy, John Wayne and Marilyn Monroe.

Three years ago, Terrail handed the place’s management to his son, Andre, though he still came in every day for lunch and dinner.

Restaurants run in the family. Terrail’s nephew Patrick Terrail founded Ma Maison, Wolfgang Puck’s first restaurant in Los Angeles.
