Two of the fastest goals in Red Bulls’ franchise history got New York a desperately needed win.

For the Galaxy, it was simply another frustrating night and the continuation of a rough patch.

After ending a club-record seven-game losing streak with a tie last weekend, the Galaxy watched Edson Buddle and Jean-Philippe Peguero score in a 69-second span of the first half to lead the Red Bulls to a 2-1 victory at Giants Stadium on Saturday.

On the negative side, it meant the Galaxy’s winless streak has now reached nine games after a battle of last-place teams.

Still, Galaxy Coach Frank Yallop remained positive.

“All the three games I’ve had, we have gotten better and better,” Yallop said. “We know in this league you can’t be sloppy and take your foot off the gas at all, because a team will score against you. Maybe we did that. I haven’t seen the goals, but maybe we were a little sleepy in that department.”

After starting the season with a six-game winless streak, the Red Bulls (2-2-7) have lost only once in their last seven games.

“I think we just kind of needed to believe in ourselves more than anything else,” defender Steve Jolley said after New York won for the first time since a 5-4 victory over Chivas USA on May 20. “We have a good team. We just haven’t gotten the results we sometimes deserved.”

The Galaxy (2-10-2) took the lead in the 25th minute on a goal by Herculez Gomez.

On New York’s first goal, Youri Djorkaeff chipped a pass over Galaxy defender Nathan Sturgis to spring Buddle in alone on goaltender Kevin Hartman for his second goal of the year.

A little more than a minute later, Seth Stammler beat defender Tyrone Marshall and found Peguero on the right edge of the penalty box. The striker slid a shot under Hartman for the game-winning goal. It was his team-high sixth goal, all coming over the last six games.
