Using fire for control
Re “When Planned Burns Go Awry,” June 18
The indigenous peoples of California used planned fire as a means of controlling land and preventing wildfires for centuries, for the most part without disastrous mistakes. If Forest Service experts cannot figure out how to use fire safely and correctly, perhaps they should work in partnership with the native California tribes that know their land intimately and long ago perfected the technique of controlled burns.
