Guillen Fined in One Incident, Suspended in Other

Chicago White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen was fined Thursday by Commissioner Bud Selig and ordered to attend sensitivity training for making derogatory comments about a columnist this week.

In a separate penalty, Guillen was also suspended along with White Sox pitcher David Riske after the reliever threw at Chris Duncan of St. Louis on Tuesday night.

Before that game, Guillen went into an obscenity-laced tirade against Chicago Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti, calling him a “fag.”

“Ozzie Guillen used language that is offensive and completely unacceptable,” Selig said in a statement. “Baseball is a social institution with responsibility to set appropriate tone and example. Conduct or language that reflects otherwise will not be tolerated. The use of slurs embarrasses the individual, the club and the game.”

Guillen apologized and acknowledged that his use of the word might have offended some -- but he kept up his criticism of the columnist, including using another obscenity to describe him.

Mariotti recently criticized Guillen’s handling of rookie pitcher Sean Tracey, who could be seen distraught in the dugout last week in Texas after Guillen became angry when the White Sox didn’t retaliate for catcher A.J. Pierzynski twice being hit with pitches.

Tracey was later sent to the minors.

Riske was suspended three games for throwing at Duncan, and Guillen received a one-game ban. They were also each fined an undisclosed amount.

The Minnesota Twins signed first-round draft pick Chris Parmelee to a minor league contract that includes a $1.5-million bonus.

Parmelee, an outfielder from Chino Hills High, was selected with the 20th overall pick.

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Jon Lieber gave up one run over three innings in Clearwater, Fla., in his first minor league rehabilitation start since being sidelined last month by a strained left groin.

Pittsburgh Pirates Manager Jim Tracy and Cincinnati Reds Manager Jerry Narron were selected by Houston’s Phil Garner to be coaches for the National League in the All-Star game.

Garner will manage the NL team on July 11 in Pittsburgh. The White Sox’s Guillen will lead the AL squad.
